Diversity in the United States is now a required component of the campus's General Education program. Since Diversity in the United States is a Shared Goal within the General Education program, each degree-granting unit gets to determine how the requirement is satisfied.
The College's Committee for Undergraduate Education recommends that the requirement be satisfied through the College's CASE Diversity in the United States requirement, currently required of all College B.A., B.F.A., and B.L.S. students. The rationale for this approach includes:
- The infrastructure already exists for CASE Diversity in the United States and the faculty have given special care to ensure that CASE DUS courses are meaningful experiences for students
- A significant number of B.S. students already complete a CASE DUS course—whether because they are pursuing a second degree, want to complete a CASE DUS courses, or took one by accident
- To offer something completely different for B.S. students would confuse students and academic advisors and ignores the fluidity with which students change their degree objective between B.A. and B.S. degrees
