The RSA—something you may have seen/heard me mention over the summer—is now available for use. The RSA asks students for the necessary information based on a logic set undergirding the form.
The RSA replaces the following:
- Status Update form
- Resumption of Studies Inquiry form; and
- 8-Year Review petitions
It also serves as a way for a student who was not term activated or given a registration appointment due to being on the tentative graduation list and who recently changed their anticipated graduation date to make a request to be set up for enrollment.
The RSA also allows dismissed students to request permission to enroll in non-degree-seeking status.
Please refer students to the RSA if they need to be set up for enrollment in any way. The old forms referenced above are being taken down/inactivated, though we will continue to process any that we already received.
The College has long had a practice that allowed students to take one academic term of non-degree-seeking enrollment after completing their bachelor’s degree in the College. This has been helpful to some students, particularly those who may wish to finish up pre-professional graduate program admission requirements. The option for this non-degree-seeking status through the College is no longer available effective immediately. This, however, does not mean graduates cannot continue to get post-graduation non-degree-seeking enrollment. Graduates seeking such enrollment should be referred to the campus non-degree program at https://nondegree.indiana.edu/.
8-Year Review practices. Currently there are two main ways the 8-Year Review process is activated: one being students enrolled in classes at IU whose 8-year window expired and the other being students seeking to resume their studies and whose 8-year window expired or is about to expire. These two points of activation will continue, but some of the associated practices will change:
- The underlying assumption in all cases will be that students will be moved to new degree requirements. Students who are close to graduation (generally within a semester or 12 credit hours) will be given an opportunity to appeal to remain on their current requirements. These appeals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This is not a significant departure from past practice, but it does establish a default position (new requirements) where there was not one in the past.
- Enrolled students (any campus) pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College whose 8 years have expired or who have exceeded any extension they were given will be contacted by the College’s Student Records and Services office via email. The email will inform students they are impacted by the 8-Year policy and will be moved to new degree requirements unless they appeal within a given window of time and have their appeal subsequently approved. The student’s assigned College advisor (or advising office in cases where there is no individual College advisor assigned) will be copied on the original email message and any appeal decision. This review and appeal window will take place during the early part of the semester. The Fall 2024 review for those students who either (1) matriculated Fall 2016 or earlier or (2) were given a graduation deadline of Summer 2024 or earlier will occur next week. This includes any student who has applied for Fall 2024 graduation, though those students are, naturally, excellent candidates for an extension via the appeal process.
- Students who are seeking to resume their studies following a stopout (including those who do so via a school change) will be provided information about 8-Year Review and the opportunity to appeal when they complete the RSA.
