Experiential Learning Courses

EL overview

The IU 2030 and IUB 2030 strategic plans both include goals of increasing (and tracking) student participation in curricular and co-curricular experiential learning (EL) activities. There are a few ongoing discussions about whether EL should be required for all students and, if so, how such a requirement would be implemented. For now, however, IU and the campus is interested in getting existing curricular opportunities assigned the appropriate designation(s) in our systems.

The university and campus administration will user these designations, for now, for tracking and reporting as we get baseline information on curricular EL opportunities and participation. Eventually, these designations might be available as filtering attributes for students in the Schedule of Classes and other curricular tools.

EL designations and definitions

Below are the names and definitions for the IU and IUB Experiential Learning attributes.

Level EL Category DefinitionNotes
IU and IUBInternshipsExperiential learning in a work setting, generally related to a student’s career objective. Internships must be supervised by a qualified professional at the organization where the internship is being conducted. The internship may consist of full-time or part-time work, be paid or unpaid and may be taken for credit or independently for no credit by the student for the purpose of gaining practical experience.

College Experiential Education Courses (EEC) policy

The College has an Experiential Education Courses (EEC) policy (created about a decade ago) that, in part, provides for consistent numbering of common experiential learning courses. This policy remains in effect.

During the summer 2024, the Office of Undergradute Curriculum, Policy, and Records assigned the appropriate EL attributes to each EEC course (and a few others) based on the EEC policy. College academic units do not need to reapply for designations for these courses.

Proposing courses for EL designation

College academic units (including the College schools) may propose courses for EL designation.

At this time, academic units may only propose courses for an EL designation. This means that all offerings of the course—no matter who teaches it, the academic term offered, or the number of credit hours—must meet the requirements for the designation(s) the unit is seeking.

The College will treat a specific topic of a variable title course as a “course” for the purpose of the EL designation implementation.

Courses may carry more than one designation.

Only a unit Chair/Director, Director of Undergraduate Studies, or Unit Scheduling Officer/Curricular Assistant (on behalf of the Chair/Director or DUS) can submit a proposal on behalf of an academic unit. Proposals are submitted via the College's EL Designation Application.

Submit an EL Designation Application

The application will ask for the following information:

  • Course number
  • EL attributes being sought
  • Semester(s) typically offered
  • Syllabus
  • Course LOs, EL activities, student development methods, reflection activities, mentoring/supervision plan
  • Participation costs (beyond tuition) and barriers
