In Spring 2024, a campus-wide academic standing policy was approved by the BFC. As part of this policy, students who are dismissed by their academic units can also be dismissed from the IUB campus if their cumulative GPA is below 2.000. To qualify for dismissal from the College, students must have been on Academic Alert in their most recent term of enrollment, prior to the current one, and have a cumulative and a term GPA below 2.000. Starting with the Fall 2024 semester, this means that all students dismissed by the College with cumulative GPAs below 2.000 are also dismissed from IUB.
In Spring 2025, the campus announced that students dismissed from campus after the Fall 2024 semesterand in future semesters must seek reinstatement to the campus through a new process:
For Fall reinstatement | For Spring reinstatement | For Summer Reinstatement |
June 5 | September 10 | February 1 |
- After students submit their petitions, a representative from the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (OVPUE) will meet with each student to determine their academic interests and connect them with the unit, if viable, and to support resources
- The petitions of students who have met with OVPUE with an interest in a degree path in the College will then be forwarded to the College for review
- The College will review petitions received from OVPUE at the same time as petitions from students who were dismissed prior to the Fall 2024 semester and issue decisions following the College’s process described below
- In spring 2025, the Office of Undergraduate Retention and Student Success (OURSS) sent a message to all students who were dismissed by the College as the result of their Fall 2024 academic performance to inform them that they must follow the campus-wide process
Students who were dismissed by the College prior to the Fall 2024 semester will follow the College’s modified reinstatement process:
- Students must attend a mandatory meeting with a member of the Student Success Team in OURSS. We have removed the deadline for attending a meeting, but students are encouraged to meet with our team 3-4 weeks prior to the petition deadline in order to allow sufficient time to complete the petition.
- If a student has met with someone on our team since their dismissal, they do *not* need to meet again, but they are welcome to do so if they would find it helpful.
- After students attend their meeting with OURSS, they will receive a link to the College’s Petition for Reinstatement
- The deadlines for submitting the College’s Petition for Reinstatement are the following:
For Fall reinstatement | For Spring reinstatement | For Summer Reinstatement |
June 10 | October 1 | February 15 |
OURSS Review of Petitions forwarded by VPUE (4248 and future dismissals) and the College’s Petition for Reinstatement (pre-4248 dismissals)
- OURSS will review each student’s petition and make a preliminary determination to:
- Defer reinstatement pending the completion of stipulations by a determined date
- Deny reinstatement; students whose petitions are denied will be encouraged to meet with the Student Success Team for feedback and to discuss options
- Students whose petitions are deferred will be required to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor for their major to plan their enrollments for their reinstatement semester
- Students will no longer be required to meet with an academic advisor prior to submitting their petition. We hope that this change will:
- help avoid bottlenecks for academic advisors who try to accommodate students who submit last-minute petitions
- allow more flexibility in meeting with an academic advisor before or during NSO
- Once a student completes all of their individual stipulations, they will be officially reinstated, which we hope will allow students to register while there are still open seats in classes that tend to fill quickly during NSO
If you would kindly refer students dismissed based on Fall 2024 grades and in future semesters to the
OVPUE website for their next steps and refer students who were dismissed before Fall 2024 to the College's OURSS team, we’ll make sure they know what their next steps are.
