As he considering asking the faculty to enact a Career Readiness requirement, Executive Dean Van Kooten recognized that, even if the faculty saw value in it, many would be concerned that the undergraduate curriculum is already full and cannot possibly sustain another requirement being added without eliminating or changing something else. He therefore empaneled a special committee to consider what might be eliminated or changed in the curriculum to make room for a career requirement.
The committee consisted of the following members: Brandon Barker, Constantine Deliyannis, Melody Deusner, Terri Greenslade, Justin Grossman, Paul Gutjahr (Chair), Rich Hardy, Joe Lovejoy, Jeremy Schott, John Stone, and Caleb Weintraub. The committee met nine times from August 29 to November 7, 2022 and delivered its final report to the Executive Dean in November. The committee did not take a position on whether there should be a Career Readiness requirement nor on whether any requirements should be removed. It merely recommended that, if a requirement must be removed to make room for a new requirement, this could most easily be achieved by removing the CASE Public Oral Communication requirement.
They considered a variety of other options as well and came to the following conclusions.
CASE Requirement | B.A. | B.F.A. | B.S. | B.L.S. | Rationale/Remarks |
English Composition | 1 course | 1 course | 1 course | 1 course | Requirement is aligned with GenEd EC. It is more or less a universal requirement across the country. Not a good candidate for making room in the curriculum. |
Mathematical Modeling | 1 course | 1 course | 1 course | 1 course | Requirement is aligned with GenEd MM. Double-counts as CASE NM. Elimination would not yield credit-hour savings for students in most cases. Not a good candidate for making room in the curriculum. |
Arts & Humanities | 4 courses | 4 courses | 2–4 courses | 4 courses | GenEd requires at least 2 courses in each Breadth of Inquiry area, which double-counts for CASE BoI. Furthermore, reducing any one of these across the board could result in some student completing only 1 course in a particular area. Generally speaking, it is B.S. students who are most stressed for elective hours; they are also generally the least affected by CASE BoI. Potential candidate, but not for most B.S. students. |
Natural & Mathematical Sciences | 4 courses | 4 courses | 2–4 courses | 4 courses
Social & Historical Studies | 4 courses | 4 courses | 2–4 courses | 4 courses
Diversity in the United States | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | 0–1 courses at IUB | 1 course at IUB | Requirement is how the College fulfills the GenEd Shared Goal of Diversity in the United States. Most courses on the course list double-count with CASE BoI. Elimination would not yield credit-hour savings for students in most cases. Not a good candidate for making room in the curriculum. |
Global Civilizations & Cultures | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | 0–1 courses at IUB | 1 course at IUB | Most courses on the course list double-count with CASE BoI. Not all B.S. degree programs required CASE GCC. Elimination would not yield credit-hour savings for students in most cases. Not a good candidate for making room in the curriculum. |
Critical Approaches to the Arts & Sciences | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | All courses on the course list double-count with CASE BoI. Elimination would not yield credit-hour savings for students in most cases. Not a good candidate for making room in the curriculum. |
Foreign Language | 4th semester | 4th semester | 1 st–4 th semester depending on degree program. Most require 3 rd semester. | Not required | Reduction by one semester across the board was unpalatable for many committee members, especially a reduction to the equivalent to the first or second semester. Other reasons were also discussed by the committee as outlined in the report. Potential candidate, but likely not without controversy. |
Intensive Writing | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | 1 course at IUB | Typically double-, triple-, or quadruple-counted with a major, CASE BoI, and/or CASE DUS/GCC, requirement. Elimination would not yield credit-hour savings for students in most cases. Not a good candidate for making room in the curriculum. |
Public Oral Communication | 1 course | 1 course | 1 course | 1 course | Recommended that this requirement be considered for elimination. |
CASE Sustainability Literacy was not yet a requirement, so it does not appear in the chart above. It likely would have been assessed like Diversity in the United States.
